The Fell Runners

The Fell Runners are an informal group within South Cheshire Harriers. They are mainly defined as those that go out to the fells/country for their Tuesday night run when the light permits. It is open to all harriers to join in the fun. "When the light permits" is probably best described as when British Summer Time is in action rather than having sunlight to run in, as head torches are always needed towards the end of the season. It actually started on Thursdays but it was changed to suit John Booth some years ago. Absolutely everyone is invited to join in the Tuesday outing as long as they do not mind hills and/or mud.

The Fell Runners have their own sub-culture and award system.

Many years ago Alan W decided that the end of the year was getting to dark for sensible running and proposed an outing to the pub instead. Hence was started the annual "Alan's Run" held just after BST finishes. It has always been successful and the tenth one was held in November 2005 with 24 attendees. Invitation is from Alan personally. Unfortunately Alan declared that the 2005 one was the last he is organising. Perhaps he can be persuaded otherwise or a willing and able volunteer will come forward. It has been a great system so far with a convivial pub for drink and food plus a transport system of two Bombadier minibuses driven by Alan and Owen: Very much appreciated!

There are a few forms of award still remembered. The main one is the Fell Runners' Award (or some other name) which is 6" figure on a plinth. The figure is not particularly attractive but it otherwise does remind you of John B. It was thought to have been provided by the Vet. It is awarded each Alan's Run by the current holder to whoever he/she thinks is a deserving recipient. The rules for making the decision are not defined.

Another award is the Yellow Jersey which is/was presented for fell running performance. It has fallen into disuse mainly because of Boot: He continually won it and no-one else got a look in. There is also a crown around somewhere that was awarded for some thing.
