There is no excuse
so why not TRI?
The fact that you are
reading this suggests that you run so you are at least a
third of the way to doing your first triathlon. If you have a
bike and can swim start filling in the entry form now. If
any of the above two are lacking start looking for two
friends with whom to complete the relay event (see there
really are no excuses!).
C+N Triathlon is a jolly
affair mixing total novices with a handful of elite
triathletes, youngsters with the over 80s (one of whom also
happens to be a world champ). There is a choice of events:
Novice 200 m swim 20 km (12
mile) bike 2.5 km (1.5 mile) run
Sprint 750 m swim 20 km
bike 5 km run
Relay As above but with one
team member swimming, one cycling etc.
The event is usually over-subscribed,
so it is well worth entering early. This years event will
take place on Sunday July 30th.
So what happens if you
do decide to enter?
-
- About a week or so
before the race you will receive your start time. The
actual time will depend upon which race you have entered
and how fast you estimate your swim to be.
-
- On the day, turn up to
registration in plenty of time with all the appropriate
bits of kit (swimsuit, goggles, bike, helmet, running
shoes etc.) collect your number and be written on in
black marker pen (triathletes are a funny bunch).
-
- Pin number to a belt
or to what you will be cycling or running in do
NOT swim with it on!
-
- Set up any running
stuff in the Barony Fields transition area (and remember
whereabouts you left it).
-
- Cycle to the baths and
rack bike (set out helmet, talc, number, shades etc.)
ready for a quick getaway.
-
- Check out race exit
from the pool usually down tarmac track at side of
baths (very hard on bare feet).
-
- Make sure you are
ready to swim and go poolside to receive instructions.
-
- Start on time
swim (any stroke acceptable although I have found
that doggie paddle is extremely tiring and therefore not
recommended).
-
- After swimming
appropriate number of lengths (you count) get out - trot
to bike.
-
- Put cycle/running
shirt on BEFORE helmet. Dont forget number and all
triathletes wear shades (even in the rain).
-
- Run with bike to end
of transition area, then pedal like mad for 20 km. It is
worth checking out the route a few days before it
isnt difficult but people have been known to
get lost/ go around twice etc!
-
- On reaching the Barony
hop off bike, rack and then remove helmet (can get
time penalties for taking it off earlier).
-
- Establish that it is
impossible to run after having ridden 20 km but do so
nevertheless.
-
- Celebrate finish with
a post race massage and a shopping fix at Athletes Feet
-
- Tell friends about the
time you overtook a world champion (neglect to mention
his age)
-
- Enter next race
